Future Problem Solvers
After all fourth graders are screened in brainstorming and creative thinking, selected fourth graders work together with their coach, Mrs. Golden, to learn the challenging problem solving process. Emphasis is placed on learning how to brainstorm ideas, how to listen to the ideas of others, and how to evaluate ideas in order to find the best solutions. This year’s topics, which are set at the International level, included “Recovering from a Natural Disaster” and “The Global Workplace”.
The students worked cooperatively on teams in February to compete in the state level competition. Then in mid-March the problem solving teams from Cheltenham Elementary will compete against teams from the other elementary schools and join problem solvers from Elkins Park School, Cedarbrook and Cheltenham High School at the annual District Bowl. The important problem solving skills that these creative and critical thinkers learn will then enable them to solve challenges that they face in the real world.
